Description
iCare is looking for an experienced Senior R&D Engineer to help develop the next generation of ophthalmic medical devices and technologies. In this role, you will work across the full product development lifecycle, from early-stage research, concept generation, and technology evaluation to product development, market launch, and lifecycle management. You will have an important role in turning promising ideas and research findings into reliable, commercially successful solutions that create tangible value for healthcare professionals and patients. The position combines hands-on technical work, experimentation, prototyping, testing, and system-level thinking in a regulated medical device environment. You will collaborate with experts across multiple disciplines while having the independence to investigate complex technical questions and drive solutions forward. Basic information • Office location: Vantaa (Härkähaankuja 7) • Work model: Hybrid (2-3 days/week in office) • Traveling: Occasional travel depending on project needs • Contract: Permanent position • Preferred start: As soon as possible Key activities & responsibilities • Participate in the development of new ophthalmic medical devices, technologies, and product improvements. • Drive technical investigations, feasibility studies, proof-of-concept activities, and technology evaluations. • Design, build, and evaluate prototypes to support product development decisions. • Contribute to system-level design and multidisciplinary product development projects. • Support verification, validation, testing, and risk management activities. • Prepare and maintain technical documentation required in a regulated environment. • Collaborate closely with hardware, software, mechanics, clinical, quality, regulatory, and manufacturing stakeholders. • Identify and evaluate intellectual property opportunities and contribute to invention disclosures and patent-related activities. • Apply data analysis and scripting tools to support development and investigation work when needed. • Identify technical challenges early and proactively drive solutions forward. • Support the lifecycle management and continuous improvement of products in the field, including technical investigations, product enhancements, and the resolution of field-related issues. Who we are looking for • An MSc or PhD in Physics, Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or another relevant technical field. • At least 5 years of experience in product development, research and development, or technology development. • A proven track record of contributing to the development of commercial products. • Experience working in multidisciplinary R&D environments. • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities. • Experience in technical documentation and structured development processes. • The ability to communicate complex technical topics clearly to different audiences. • Fluency in both written and spoken English, Finnish is considered an advantage. We would also welcome experience in any of the following areas: • Experience in medical device development or another regulated industry. • A background in physics, optics, sensing technologies, signal processing, or instrumentation. • Programming skills for data analysis, automation, or technical investigations, for example with Python. • Experience in prototyping and experimental product development. • An understanding of regulatory requirements and design control processes. • Experience in patent generation, other intellectual property activities, or research publications. • Experience applying AI, machine learning, or advanced data analysis methods in research or product development. • Experience working in an academic research group or industrial research organization. To succeed in the role, you combine scientific curiosity with practical product development skills. You are proactive, self-driven, and comfortable working with uncertainty and open-ended technical challenges. You work in a structured and quality-oriented manner, collaborate effectively with others, and communicate clearly. You are also interested in understanding real-world user needs and willing to raise concerns early and contribute constructively to technical discussions.
